I. Location, Geographical facts:
The island is located in the central and most popular ZADAR Region about 20 Kms from the Capital City of Dalmatia to the North-West.
VIR is the 20st island by size in Croatia and the 8th biggest in the Region.
The Island`s width is 4Km, it`s length is about 10 and the area is roughly 22 sqKm.
It`s shore is 31 km long with rocky and sandy shores.
The highest elevation is 112 m above the sea level.
During the roman times it was a peninsula now it has a 390 m long bridge for easy passage.
II. Moments from VIR`s History:
According to the archeology VIR was an inhabited place by Liburns (a tribe of Illirians) from the Stone age.
First written reference found is dated from 1096 in King Kreshimir the IV`s charta as Ueru (Veru).
During the reign of the hungarian King Kalman, from 1202 VIR belonged to Hungary.
In the year of 1313 the Venetian Republic has occupied the dalmatian coast and VIR as well. The venetians built the first fortress on the island at this time.
During The Ottoman raids the Venetians had reconstructed and reinforced the Kozjak Fort as it can be seen today.
Then later the Island has changed hands, beeing rented territory used as pasture.
Passing the venetian rule the Habsburgs annected VIR into Austria then belonged to French Empire then back to Austria.
The land owner Family started then in 1014 concluded the negotiations with locals about the private purchase of the land on VIR.
Since then as a private property from 1918 become part of the Serb- Croatian- Slovenian Kingdom, then from 1945 as part of Yugoslavia.
After all in 1992 received the status of Soverign Settlement and in 1993 gained the rank of Municipality of the Republic of Croatia.
